EDINBURG, TX – Longwood claimed a 4-1 victory over NJIT at the 2009 Division I Independent Women's Tennis Tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Highlanders only point of the match came at first singles where senior Iulia Doci defeated Longwood's Zsofia Jakab in straight sets, (2-6, 4-6). Doci recorded her 15th win of the season.
Longwood added victories at second, fourth and sixth singles and swept the doubles contests for its fourth point of the match.
Highlanders' Fanny Aizier and Dasa Stanimirovic did not finish their matches. Aizier at #3 singles (6-7 (0), 1-1, unfinished) and Stanimirovic at the fifth spot (5-7, 4-5, unfinished)
The unusual score is the result of the tournament format, which calls for incomplete individual matches to be halted as soon as one team achieves the points necessary to clinch a victory. That means the point for doubles is won as soon as one team wins two of the slots and the entire match is over as soon as one team wins four points overall.
The Highlanders will wrap up the three-day, five-team round robin tournament Sunday when they face Seattle.
