FULLERTON, CA – Hope International, ranked fourth in the national NAIA poll, defeated NJIT, 3-0 (30-26, 30-27 and 30-28) Friday evening at the Darling Pavilion.
Junior Alex Figueiredo led the Royals offense with a double-double (21 kills, 14 digs). NJIT's Charles Bell had a team-high 18 kills while senior Amobi Armstrong notched 10.
Hope International's setters Shawn Cui and Danilo Pereira finished with 22 and 20 assists respectively, playing three sets each, while NJIT freshman Adam Gustafson had a match-high 27.
The home team had a 4-1 advantage in service aces, with four different players tallying one ace.
On defense, Figueriedo had a match-high 14 digs, leading two Royals with double-figures in that category. Noah Casaquit dug up 11.
Freshman Raphael Mattos led the visitors with eight digs. Armstrong collected six digs while three Highlanders notched five -- Gustafson, freshman Glen DeMagalhaes and sophomore Chuck Richmond.
Hope International had a slight advantage in blocking, 9-8, at the net. Nelson Hernandez had three total blocks (3 assists) for the Royals. Senior Robert Thomas of NJIT had a team-high three blocks (3 assists) while Gustafson had two (2 assists). Three different Highlanders had one block assist each.
NJIT will return to action on Saturday when it faces Southern California, tied for fifth in the national NCAA Division I-II poll. The match is scheduled for 10 pm (EDT).
