TENAFLY, NJ – The NJIT men's tennis team claimed a 4-3 win from visiting Howard Saturday night at Tenafly Racquet Club.
The Highlanders had a 4-2 favor in the singles contests and picked up one victory in doubles competition which came at second doubles when Steve Erickson and Anthony Tunnero defeated Howard's Omar Haloni and Chad Jones 8-4.
Erickson, competing at first singles registered a win in a hard fought three set match against Michael Gee, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-1). Freshman Carl Lundquist earned his third win of the season in as many matches since joining the Highlanders roster this semester defeating Howard's Chris Brown in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 at second singles.
NJIT's other two singles winners were: Cosmin Chiujdea at third singles 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 and freshman Dan Saloman at fifth singles 6-2, 6-0.
Howard picked up wins at fourth and sixth singles and won two out of three doubles contests.
Using the seven-point match scoring system, the team that wins the majority of doubles earns one point. The four victories in the singles competition lifted NJIT to the win.
The Highlanders will return to action on February 21 when they travel to Hartford. The match will begin at 2:30pm.
