ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State's freshman forward Cassie Rodriguez scored at 75:11 for the only goal Friday evening, as her team, nipped New Jersey Institute of Technology 1-0 in Great West Conference women's soccer action.
The victory for South Carolina State, who have won the last six out of seven matches improve to 8-5 overall, 2-1 in the Great West Conference. NJIT is now 4-6-2 overall, 1-1-1 in the Great West Conference.
Rodriguez scored her fifth goal of the season for the Lady Bulldogs as she received the pass up the middle from classmate Veronica Aguilar. Aguilar registered her first assist of the 2009 season.
The final shots were: NJIT had nine shots (five on goal) to 15 (four on goal) for South Carolina State. The corner kicks favored the visitors, 4-2; and the fouls were 10 called on South Carolina State to five for the Highlanders.
Freshman midfielder Gechi Ukaegbu recorded three shots (two on goal) while Piper Lunan and Kori Washington posted two shots apiece for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders junior goalkeeper Sadie Mele made three stops while South Carolina State's Alechia Brothers needed five saves to record the shutout.
NJIT is off for a week and will return to action when they host Delaware State on Sunday, October 18 at 2:00pm at Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium.
