WASHINGTON, DC—Rachael Lee's goal with nine seconds left in regulation enabled Howard to escape defeat against visiting NJIT and the teams went on to a 1-1 double overtime draw in Great West Conference women's soccer Sunday afternoon.
The teams are now even in the Great West Conference Eastern Division standings with 1-0-1 conference records. NJIT is 4-5-2 overall, while Howard's overall record is 1-6-2.
Howard's last game was on September 25, when the Bison got their first win, defeating Delaware State, 3-0, in the Great West opener. NJIT, on the other hand, opened conference play just two days earlier, defeating South Carolina State, 2-1, Friday night in Newark.
Neither team scored in the first half Sunday, but the Highlanders got on the board within two minutes of the start of the second half.
Howard fouled NJIT's Gechi Ukaegbu and the Highlanders were awarded a penalty kick that Michelle Borth converted at 46:43. It was the second goal of the season for Borth, a junior back.
Although they didn't score any more, the Highlanders protected the lead into the closing seconds of regulation when Lee provided the equalizer on an assist from Jordan Brown. Lee's goal was her second of the season.
Brown's pass came from the right side and Lee lofted a floating shot that evaded NJIT's diving goalkeeper Sadie Mele with nine ticks left in the second half.
Mele went on to make two saves in the first overtime and the Highlanders got the game's only two shots in the second overtime, but one was saved and the other went high.
The game totals found Mele with nine saves, while her Howard counterpart, Chanel Bell, made five saves.
The total shots were 16-11 for NJIT, but the shots on goal were 10-6 in favor of Howard. The Bison had six corner kicks to two for the Highlanders.
NJIT will visit South Carolina State on Friday in a 7 pm matchup in Orangeburg, SC. That game is a rematch a week after the Highlanders opened Great West Conference play with a hard-fought 2-1 home win against the Lady Bulldogs.
