NEWARK, NJ -- After back-to-back losses to Skidmore and Albany, NJIT got back on track Saturday night against the Greyhounds from Moravian College. With both teams missing key personnel the game was somewhat sluggish. The Greyhounds had the initial advantage out-shooting the Highlanders 6-2 in the early going. Chris Oertel (1 goal 1 assist) and Tim Cornely changed that when Tim jumped on a loose puck in the crease after Chris had blasted a shot on net from the point.
Justin Gelesky, with assists from Desi Fioravanti and Richard Travellin, scored the game winner a few minutes later. Meanwhile Desi scored a quirky "Natural" Hat-Trick (his 2nd of the season) as he netted the last goal of the 1st period, the only goal of the 2nd period and the first goal of the 3rd period.
Freshman defenseman Mike Melillo, on an end-to-end rush, scored on a nifty move to cap off the night.
Although NJIT won the game by a 4-goal margin, it wasn't as easy at it might have seemed. Despite the fact that Fioravanti (3 goals 1 assist) Justin Gelesky (1 goal 3 assists) had strong offensive games the Highlanders were not at the top of their game as the final shots were only 32 - 28. If it weren't for the stellar play in net by Joe Cestaro the score would have been much closer.
The Highlanders, with a 7-2-0 record, say goodbye to the Prudential Center as they head out on the road for the last 4 games of the semester. Hofstra, may be struggling in the top division, but they will be a huge test for NJIT at the Long Beach Ice Arena on Saturday at 8:00 PM. The Lions will attempt to turn their season around, while the Highlanders will be looking for their first win against an elite team.
