NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT men's tennis team scored a convincing 6-1 win over visiting Fordham Wednesday afternoon on the Fleisher Athletic Center courts.
The Highlanders, who won five of the six singles spots and claimed the doubles point by sweeping all three spots, are 3-1 on the season, while Fordham drops to 3-3 on the season.
Three of the singles wins came in straight sets for the Highlanders, while the other two wins were decided in three sets. Fordham's only win came at second singles, when Dallas Harting topped NJIT's Jonathan Lang when Lang retired due to a hamstring injury down 1-2 in the first set.
The Highlanders opened the day with three doubles wins. Steve Erickson and Cosmin Chiujdea topped Harting and Austin Shoup, 8-5, in first doubles. Lang and Anthony Tunnerro were 8-6 winners at number two and Dimitri Athans and Bryan Keelan teamed for an 8-4 third doubles win.
The straight-sets winners for the Highlanders were: Erickson over Shoup at first singles, 6-4, 6-3; Tunnerro at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-4; and Keelan, who won handily at number six, 6-1, 6-2.
Chiujdea took the point at third singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, and Athans won the closest matchup of the day, defeating Fordham's Sotiris Georgiou at number four, 7-6, 2-6, 10-8.
The Highlanders, who are done with team match play for the Fall 2008 portion of the 2008-09 season, will compete at the three-day Hampton Roads Invitational in Norfolk, VA, beginning on Friday.
