Men's Hockey Wins Fourth Straight

NEWARK, NJ -- In a penalty filled contest that resembled a fight scene from Spartacus instead of a hockey game, The Highlanders - behind the spectacular goaltending of Joe Cestaro, defeated the Spartans from St. Thomas Aquinas to extend their winning streak and remain unbeaten this year at 4-0-0.

With just a few minutes gone in the 1st period and the Highlanders already on their 2nd power play, sophomore James Wintjen (1 goal, 2 assists) - assisted by Desi Fioravanti and Mike Mellilo scored the only goal that would be needed as the home team took an early lead. The lead was extended a few minutes later when Justin Gelesky (2 goals, 0 assists) scored his first goal of the night.

The game developed into a war of attrition as the Spartans tried their best to intimidate the Highlanders. The teams traded shots and penalties with St.

Thomas ahead (behind?) by a 2:1 margin in penalties, which helped NJIT to a

36 to 23 lead in shots-on-net. But, despite the obvious advantage, the Highlanders couldn't capitalize again until late in the game, with the Spartans down a man, Gelesky controlled the face off and fired in an insurance goal.

Fortunately, during all the foolishness, one player stood out above the fray. He also stood on his head and stood his ground and all the other things one can say about a goaltender's performance. That player was senior Joe Cestaro, who posted his - and the team's first ever shutout.

Next up: Maritime @ Prudential Center 8:00 PM Friday night. (Come as you are - or dress up for Halloween!)

Come out and support the Highlanders as they look to continue their winning ways against another divisional opponent.
