NJIT Completed a successful weekend with a 6-3 victory over the Columbia University Lions.
Freshman Yllano Tubijella was strong in his first start in net while the Highlanders played what is becoming a typical game for them. As usual they jumped out to an early lead only to relax and let the other team get back into the game.
After scoring the first 4 goals the Highlanders watched as the Lions came roaring back with 3 unanswered scores of their own before the first period was over.
A commitment to hard work and defense was seen in the 2nd and 3rd periods as NJIT shut down Columbia the rest of the way while scoring 1 goal in each period.
Scoring for the Highlanders were Justin Gelesky (2-goals, 1-assist) Kevin McMorrow (1-goal, 1-assist), Tim Cornely (1-goal, 1-assist), Chris Oertel and Desi Fioravanti. Colin McArdle, Mike Melillo, Miguel Dominguez each earned an assist.
Special teams were the key to this game as 3 of the NJIT goals came on the power play and 1 by the penalty killers, who were perfect on all 4 of the Lion's power plays. Yllano stopped 35 shots in net, including a few point blank attempts.
It was great to see the continued support for NJIT as the Highlander Fans who traveled to Hackensack outnumbered the home fans by a good margin.
The Highlanders are now 2-0-0 in league play and 3-0-0 overall. Next up is St. Thomas Aquinas 7:00 PM on Saturday at Prudential Center. Get there early to ensure that you get a seat.
