FAIRFIELD, CT -- New Jersey Institute of Technology women's volleyball team came up short Friday night as it dropped a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-16) decision to Sacred Heart.
This was the second meeting of the season for the two teams'. They first met at the 2008 Highlander Challenge on September 13 where Sacred Heart came out on top in three straight sets.
NJIT's Renata Pandolfo and Baaba Hughes posted seven kills apiece, but it wasn't enough to overcome the offensive strength of Sacred Heart.
The Pioneers' Ashlyn Trimble led her team with 15 kills while teammates Maile Herthington and Brittany Best recorded 13 and 12 kills respectively. Annie Archer added nine kills.
Sets one and two played out in a similar pattern, with the score being tied on several occasions. In both instances, it was when the score was 20-19 that the Pioneers seemed to have the extra push to take control and secure the win.
On the defensive end for the Highlanders, libero Sabrina Baby and Pandolfo posted 13 digs while Erica Schultz notched nine. Schultz piled up 26 assists in the match.
For Sacred Heart, Jessica Colberg dug up 20 digs leading three double-figure players in the digs category – Best and Trimble (10) and Herthington (11). Setter Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek recorded a match-high 44 assists.
Sacred Heart had an 8-2 advantage in service aces led by Trimble with three and Best with two. NJIT's Katrina Hornstein and Baby recorded one ace apiece.
The Highlanders will return to action on Wednesday, October 22 when they travel to Columbia for a 7pm match.
Columbia scored a tight 3-2 win over the Highlanders when they faced each other at the Red Flash Invitational on September 19.
