Matt Greely was hired as an Assistant Coach at NJIT in August, 2021, following a five-year stint on the staff at Coppin State.
Greely served as the Associate Head Coach at Coppin State since 2018, also carrying the titles of pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.
In Greely's first three seasons with the Highlanders, the team made it within a game of the America East Championship twice, smashing offensive records in the process. In 2024, the Highlanders won 26 games, the second most in program history.
Greely ran the offense in 2024 as NJIT broke team program records in several offensive categories, including home runs (69), hits (520), runs (375), RBIs (345) and doubles (104). Freshman Cade Ladehoff put together arguably the best offensive season in program history and was named America East Rookie of the Year and First Team All-America East after breaking the single-season record for hits (79), RBI (60), and total bases (142). Kevin Putsky was named Second Team All-America East as he shined in his fifth season with the program, hitting .300 with 12 home runs and 44 RBI. Ladehoff (14 HR), Putsky (12 HR), Ray Ortiz (11 HR) and Luke Longo (11 HR) all hit double-digit home runs as the Highlanders hit 13 more long balls than the previous program record.
In his first season with the Highlanders, Greely helped lead a squad that set several new offensive records, while winning 26 games and finishing one game short of the America East Championship. Greely, who coached first base and worked with the hitters and outfielders in 2022, played a role in the team's offensive success as it set new records for hits (503), doubles (103), triples (17), home runs (56), walks (257), RBIs (301), extra base hits (178), total bases (808), and stolen bases (87), Centerfielder Albert Choi was named First Team All-America East, while Luke Longo was named to the America East All-Tournament Team. Additionally, Paul Franzoni set a career-high with 12 home runs, while Julio Marcano finished with eight and the pair ended their NJIT careers atop the program's career home run leaderboard with 29 each.
Greely’s time as CSU was the most successful stretch in program history. The school was 33-13 in MEAC play over a two year stretch which led to back to back total wins records and a MEAC North title. Greely’s pitching staff set program records in virtually every statistical category. The program saw an immediate impact on the recruiting front as well. Greely recruited Freshman All-American Derek Lohr and 1st team All-MEAC recipient Justin Banks into the fold. Two of the top three draft prospects in the 2020 and 2022 class were also recruiting by Greely.
Greely came to Coppin after a successful 2016 season of leading the pitching staff at Arizona Western College.
During his time at Arizona Western, the pitching staff commanded the baseball to a tune of 245 strikeouts and 105 walks in year one. Prior to AWC, Matt was in charge of pitching at Everett Community College. The EVCC Trojans finished the 2014 campaign with a 2.18 ERA and an opponent batting average of .222 in conference play.
Greely also spent three summers as the pitching coach for the Matsu Miners of the Alaska Baseball League, which is one of America’s premier summer collegiate leagues.
The Matsu Miners have been ranked as high as #2 in the country, and won the 2016 and 2017 ABL championships, while each season saw the pitching staff strike out more than 300 hitters and produce ERAs of 1.70, 2.31, and 2.45, respectively.
Greely’s coaching career began as an Assistant Coach at College of Idaho in 2009. He then moved back to his hometown in Juneau, Alaska to complete his Master’s Degree in Secondary Education. While back in Alaska he also was the Pitching Coach for Thunder Mountain HS for one year before being promoted to Head Coach during his last three years.
More than 45 of Greely’s former players have heard their names called at the MLB Draft, including Corbin Martin, Riley O'Brien and Eli Morgan, who each made it to the Major League level.
Greely pitched for four seasons in college, beginning at Walla Walla CC (WA) in 2005-06. He then attended University of the Cumberland (KY) where he played one season before transferring closer to home while completing his Bachelor’s degree in Sports and Fitness Management at the College of Idaho. Greely finished his career at College of Idaho with a 3.71 ERA.
Greely currently resides in West Orange with his wife, Alex.
