Matt Tomczyk enters his first season as a student assistant on coach Cole’s staff. Tomczyk played under Cole during his senior year at NJIT.

Tomczyk’s college career began in 2008 as an unrecruited walk-on who split time at catcher (a position he had never played). He finished his first year batting .220 with 13 hits, 7 RBI, 5 runs, 2 doubles and 2 triples.

In 2010, Tomczyk was one of three Highlanders to break the school-record for games played in a season (55). He also shared the RBI lead (29) and got four of his 29 RBI on sacrifice flies, tops on the team.

His senior year, Tomczyk was the only senior position player for NJIT, ending his final season batting with a team-best .318, with 40 runs scored (first on the team; second-best in school DI history), 12 doubles (second in 2011), a triple, four home runs (tied for second), 27 RBI (second), a .413 on-base percentage (first) and eight stolen bases (first) in 11 tries.

He also had two saves in four pitching appearances, his first mound work since 2009 while holding a 12-game hitting streak from March 27 – April 12.

Tomczyk is earning a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) at NJIT.
