Prior to NJIT: One of the top Class of 2013 point guards in Philadelphia, Mayfield, a 6-0, 170-pounder, finished his high school career by leading Abington Friends School in Jenkintown, PA, to 21 wins … He and his family are residents of Wyncote, which forms a border with the City of Philadelphia and is about 7 miles north from Center City Philadelphia. ...Last year for Abington Friends and coach Steve Chadwin, Mayfield averaged 13 points per game. Before Abington Friends, he played for Roman Catholic High School, perennially among the powers in the rugged Philadelphia Catholic League. His AAU team was Team Phenom, coached by Paul Gripper, that has sent dozens of players into high-level college basketball. ...Somewhat under the radar on the college recruiting scene early in his high school career, Mayfield opened eyes in 2011 with a 31-point effort in an AAU tournament win against the Baltimore Panthers and Aquille Carr, a Top 50 Class of 2013 national recruit at point guard, who scored 21 in the game. Carr later bypassed college to play professionally overseas. ...By the time Mayfield was ready to head to college, he was ranked 20th in his class in the Philadelphia/Eastern Pennsylvania/South Jersey region by Hoop Scoop, a service that has covered  college recruiting nationwide for 30 years. Another website, Philadelphia Sports Nation, ranked Mayfield 20th among 2013 graduates for the entire state of Pennsylvania. ...A special aspect of Philadelphia basketball is that despite a take-no-prisoners approach on the court, its players, coaches and organizers form a community across generations. Montana cited three mentors covering three generations as he was coming up in the game in Philadelphia. They were: the late John Hardnett, a coach who helped young men from the NBA down to boys not yet in high school and described by philly.com as a "hoops guru" when he passed away in 2010; Alvin Williams, who played 10 years in the NBA before retiring in 2007; and, Maalik Wayns, who went to the NBA after starring at Villanova.

Personal: Montana D. Mayfield. ... son of Dave and Barbara Mayfield. ... business major. ... born 10/20/93 in Philadelphia.
