Biography

2012: Appeared in nine games with one start in his first season on the field for NJIT. ... Porcello finished with a 0-2 record in 16 innings of work.

2011: Practiced, but did not play due to NCAA Transfer rules.


Prior to NJIT: Played one season at Seton Hall University before transferring to NJIT following the 2009-10 academic year.

At SHU in 2010: Appeared in 5 games, all in relief, and posted a 3.86 ERA in 4.2 innings pitched. Allowed 5 hits, 6 walks and two runs, with one strikeout, as opponents batted .263 against him

High School: Played at Seton Hall Prep under coach Mike Sheppard, Jr... Drafted in the 48th round by the Detroit Tigers of the 2009 MLB First Year Player Draft following his senior year in high school ... Captained the baseball team senior year...Earned First-Team All-Essex County and First Team All-Conference as a senior... Helped lead his team to the Iron Hills Conference Championship in 2009 and the Essex County Tournament Championship in 2008 and 2009... Recorded five complete games and two shutouts on the mound as a senior at Seton Hall Prep.

 

Personal: Jake A. Porcello … son of Fred and Pat Porcello … interior design major … born 4/2/91 in Mt. Kisco, NY … comes from a family with deep roots in baseball and at NJIT. Older brother, Zach, is a 2005 NJIT graduate and was a pitching star for three postseason qualifying Division II teams with the Highlanders after a year at Division I Lehigh; father, Fred, also graduated from NJIT; brother, Rick, was a first-round draft choice in 2007 and is a starting pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. He won 24 major league games before his 22nd birthday; maternal grandfather, the late Sam Dente, played nine seasons in the big leagues (1947-55), appearing in the 1954 World Series for the Cleveland Indians and received a vote for American League Most Valuable Player in 1950 as a member of the old Washington Senators.
