DOVER, DE — The NJIT women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Delaware State in the opening game of the DSU Invitational on Friday night.

The Highlanders came out strong in the opening set, keeping pace with the Hornets early. Delaware State managed to create separation down the stretch, taking the first set, 25-19, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
NJIT continued to battle in the second set, remaining within reach throughout the frame. The Hornets pulled away late to secure a 25-21 victory and take a 2-0 advantage heading into the intermission.
Delaware State closed out the match in the third set, earning a 25-15 win to complete the sweep.
Junior Ema Torres led the Highlanders offensively with a team-high eight kills, while freshman Joaneliz Maisonet added five kills. Junior Aries Fontaine contributed four kills, along with a team-high two solo blocks.
At setter, junior Cece Marino recorded a team-high 11 assists, while junior Finley McAndrew contributed four assists.
Defensively, senior Sara Siefert and sophomore Ela Akay each recorded eight digs to lead the Highlanders. Maisonet added five digs, while freshman Mya Lei-Butters contributed four.
NJIT finished the match with 28 kills, 21 assists, 40 digs, four blocks and one service ace. Delaware State recorded 37 kills, 30 assists, 43 digs and nine total blocks.

NJIT plays two on Saturday, the 5th when the Highlanders take on Lehigh and Quinnipiac with first serve scheduled for 12:03 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to close out the DSU Invitational.
