Highlanders Fall to Bryant, 5-2, Saturday Night

LITTLE FALLS, N.J. -- The NJIT baseball team carried a one-run lead into the seventh inning, but Bryant used a late surge to pull away for a 5-2 victory over the Highlanders Saturday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the fourth inning on a double to take a 1-0 lead.

The Highlanders answered in the bottom half of the frame on two separate throwing errors in the inning to give the Highlanders their first lead, 2-1.

The Bulldogs broke through in the seventh after loading the bases on a double, hit-by-pitch and bunt single. A pass ball tied the game at 2-2 before the Bulldogs added one more on a fielder's choice to put them back in front, 3-2.

The Bulldogs added insurance in the eighth on a sacrifice fly and tacked on another in the ninth on an RBI single to stretch the lead to 5-2.

The Highlanders threatened in the eighth when Ty Sallie singled and Dillon Can followed with a base hit to put runners at the corners with two outs, but the Highlanders were unable to capitalize.

On the mound, Mark Scamardella turned in another strong outing, allowing just one run on eight hits over 6.0 innings while striking out six.

Sallie paced the Highlanders offensively with a 2-for-3 performance and scored one of the Highlanders' two runs. Can and Sheehan O'Connor also recorded hits in the loss.
