Highlanders Rally from Six Down, Battle FDU to 11-11 Tie in 15-Inning Marathon

LITTLE FALLS, N.J. -- The NJIT baseball team battles with in-state opponent, FDU, to 11-11 tie in a 15-Inning marathon that was called due to the weather. 

The Knights struck first with single runs in the first and second innings before opening up a 5-0 lead in the fourth. The Knights added another run in the sixth to build a 6-0 advantage.

The Highlanders began its comeback in the bottom of the sixth when Nick Vega singled to lead off the inning and Sheehan O'Connor followed with an infield single. After Ty Sallie reached on a fielder's choice, Lorenzo Camilleri drew a walk to load the bases. Rowin O'Connor lined a two-run double to center, and the Highlanders capitalized on a pair of errors later in the frame to cut the deficit to 6-4.

The Knights answered with a run in the seventh, making it a 7-4 game.

After Vega worked a leadoff walk and Sallie followed with another free pass, Camilleri ripped an RBI double to bring home the Highlanders' fifth run. Two batters later, Rowin O'Connor launched a three-run home run to left field, giving the Highlanders their first lead of the game at 8-7.

The Highlanders added to its lead in the eighth when Vega crushed a solo home run to left before Sallie followed later in the inning with a two-run homer, extending the Highlanders' advantage to 11-7.

The Knights responded in the ninth with a three-run home run to tie the game at 11-11.

From there, both bullpens took over for the Highlanders. Tyler Kim delivered 3.1 scoreless innings in relief, striking out six and stabilizing the game through the middle extra innings, while Nelson Smith and Conner Rippo combined for three scoreless innings.

Rowin O'Connor led the Highlanders offensively with five RBIs on two hits, including the go-ahead three-run homer. Sallie scored three runs and drove in two, while Vega finished with two hits, including a homer and three runs scored. Camilleri added a double and an RBI.

NJIT welcomes Bryant to Yogi Berra Stadium as the Highlanders look to make a late push for the America East playoffs. The three-game series starts on Friday, May 1st with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
