BALTIMORE, MD–UMBC topped visiting NJIT, 16-11, in America East Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.
Despite a strong third quarter where NJIT netted six goals, the Highlanders could not overcome UMBC's early lead. NJIT successfully converted three extra-man goals.
Freshman Blake Piscitiello led the offensive charge with three goals and four assists, showcasing his ability to contribute across the board. JC Echezuria added to the scoring with a goal and two assists. Carson Piscitiello found the back of the net once, converting one of his two shots on goal into an extra-man goal. In goal, Cameron Kurdyla made 17 saves, providing crucial stops to keep the game within reach.
The first quarter began with UMBC taking a 4-1 lead at the 7:33 mark. NJIT's Dylan Sebastian scored a goal at 9:41 for the lone goal in the opening minutes. Callum Zarsky capitalized on a man-up opportunity, scoring with 1:46 left in the quarter, assisted by Blake Piscitiello. UMBC maintained control, finding the back of the net twice, closing the quarter with a 5-2 lead.
UMBC outscored NJIT 5-1 to extend its lead and took a 10-3 lead at halftime.
NJIT mounted a strong offensive effort in the third quarter, narrowing the gap on UMBC. Echezuria initiated the scoring for NJIT at 13:18, followed by a man-up goal from Wyatt Viste, assisted by Blake Piscitiello, at 11:46. Piscitiello added another goal at 9:08, further tightening the score, 10-6. Benjamin Roberts contributed with a goal at 6:20, and Ryan Sininsky found the net at 1:37, assisted by Echezuria. Despite NJIT's six-goal surge, UMBC responded with a pair of goals, maintaining their lead at 14-9 by the quarter's end.
NJIT capitalized on an extra-man opportunity with a goal by Carson Piscitiello, assisted by Blake Piscitiello at 7:52. UMBC scored a goal at the two-minute mark for a 16-10 advantage but NJIT's Frankie Semiraglio scored with 15 seconds left, assisted by Blake Piscitiello.
UMBC went on to secure the home victory, 16-11.
