LOWELL, MA -- The NJIT baseball team jumped out to an early five-run lead and held off a late push from UMass Lowell to secure a 14-11 victory on Sunday afternoon.
The Highlanders wasted no time getting the offense going, plating five runs in the top of the first inning. Austin Francis delivered a two-run double down the left-field line before Dillon Can followed with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Jack Stead capped the rally with a two-run double to give the Highlanders an early 5-0 lead.
The Highlanders continued to apply pressure throughout the game, adding two runs in the fourth on a solo home run from Cole Campbell and an RBI single from Ty Sallie. The Highlanders extended the lead again in the sixth inning behind an RBI bunt from Sheehan O'Connor and a run-scoring fielder's choice from Lorenzo Camilleri to make it 9-2.
Camilleri added to the offensive surge in the eighth inning with a solo home run to right-center, while O'Connor delivered a sacrifice fly earlier in the frame. The Highlanders then broke the game open in the ninth inning as Stead drove in a run with another double and O'Connor followed with a two-run single to stretch the lead to 14-4.
The River Hawks mounted a late rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring seven runs to tighten the contest, but Brendan Opat entered to record the final out and secure his first save of the season.
Stead led the Highlanders offensively with a 3-for-5 performance that included a double, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Campbell added two hits and three runs scored along with his home run, while O'Connor drove in a team-high four RBIs. Sallie contributed two hits and two RBIs, and Can finished with two hits and an RBI as the Highlanders totaled 13 hits on the day.
On the mound, Tade Riordan earned the win in relief, tossing 3.1 innings with three strikeouts. Starter Becker Sybirski worked the first four innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out three.
