LOWELL, MA -- The NJIT baseball team recorded 10 hits but drop series opener at UMass Lowell, 11-2, on Friday night.
The River Hawks struck early, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
The Highlanders responded in the third inning when Lorenzo Camilleri delivered an RBI single to score Jack Stead, trimming the deficit to 4-1. The Highlanders added another run in the sixth as Rowin O'Connor singled home Dillon Can, cutting the River Hawk lead to 5-2.
O'Connor led the Highlanders offensively with a 3-for-4 performance and one RBI, while Camilleri finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two walks. Can added a pair of hits and scored once as the Highlanders totaled 10 hits on the night.
On the mound, Josh Willitts worked 6.2 innings in the start, allowing five runs, three earned, while scattering six hits and striking out two.
