STATEN ISLAND, NY — NJIT fell to Wagner, 14-12, Saturday afternoon at Hameline Field after the Seahawks used a seven-goal third quarter to erase a halftime deficit.
NJIT led 9-4 at the break behind strong face off play and efficient offense, but Wagner's third-quarter surge flipped the momentum as the Seahawks outscored the Highlanders 7–1 in the period to take an 11–10 lead heading into the fourth.
Wagner extended its advantage early in the final quarter with goals from Jake Mitchell and Smith Callaghan to build a 13–10 lead. NJIT responded with goals from Wyatt Viste (9:49) and Ryan Sininsky on a man-up opportunity at 8:18 to cut the deficit to 13–12, but Mitchell added his fourth goal of the game at 6:41 to seal the 14–12 victory.
NJIT opened the scoring early in the first quarter when JC Echezuria answered Wagner's opening goal at the 10:00 mark. Goals from Will Corry and Blake Piscitiello gave the Highlanders a 3–1 edge before Wagner trimmed the margin to one. Viste scored with 4:40 left in the period, helping NJIT take a 4–2 lead after one quarter behind several key saves from goalkeeper Andrew Kurdyla.
The Highlanders built separation in the second quarter, outscoring Wagner 5–2 to take a 9–4 halftime lead. Corry scored twice in the period, including a goal just 27 seconds in, while Benjamin Roberts and Carson Piscitiello added assists as NJIT capitalized on faceoff wins and sustained offensive pressure.
Wagner turned the game in the third quarter, scoring seven times while limiting NJIT to a single goal from Roberts at the 10:41 mark.
Corry led NJIT with three goals, while Blake Piscitiello added two goals and an assist. Viste was perfect on the day, scoring three goals on three shots. Michael Gaffney controlled the faceoff circle for NJIT, winning 18 of 28 draws.
