SMITHFIELD, R.I. — The NJIT baseball team erupted for six runs in the top of the ninth inning to complete a dramatic comeback and defeat Bryant, 12–10, on Friday afternoon.
The Highlanders erased a three-run deficit entering the final frame, stringing together timely hits and capitalizing on defensive miscues to secure the road victory in the series opener.
After the Bulldogs took a 9–6 lead in the bottom of the eighth, the Highlanders responded immediately in the ninth. Lorenzo Camilleri opened the inning with a single before Jack Stead and CJ Wisniewski followed with base hits to load the bases.
Conner Rippo delivered the biggest swing of the day, ripping a three-run double down the left-field line to tie the game at 9–9. Later in the inning, Brody Levin drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single, and the Highlanders added two more insurance runs on an error and Stead's RBI single to complete the six-run rally.
The Bulldogs added a run in the bottom half of the inning, but Tyler Kim closed the door to secure his first save of the season.
Camilleri paced the Highlanders offensively with a four-hit performance, including a two-run home run in the first inning that gave the Highlanders an early 2–0 lead. He finished the afternoon with three RBIs and two runs scored. Stead added three hits and two RBIs, while Rippo drove in three runs. Austin Francis collected two hits and scored twice, and Ty Sallie added two hits and a run.
The Highlanders struck first in the opening inning when Camilleri launched a two-run homer down the right-field line. The Highlanders extended the lead to 3–0 in the fifth on Camilleri's RBI single before Bryant answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to even the score.
The back-and-forth battle continued throughout the middle innings. The Highlanders regained the lead in the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice from Cole Campbell, but the Bulldogs responded with three runs in the bottom half to take a 6–4 advantage.
The Highlanders tied the game again in the seventh behind an RBI single from Stead and a run-scoring defensive miscue before Bryant plated three runs in the eighth to set the stage for the Highlanders' late-game heroics.
Out of the bullpen, Tade Riordan earned the win after allowing just one unearned run over 1.2 innings of relief, while Kim recorded the final out with the tying run on base.
