NEWARK, NJ — Visiting UMass topped NJIT 18-14 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
The Highlanders moved to an even 2-2 on the season while UMass won its third straight improving to 3-1.
NJIT established an early lead in the first period, capitalizing on strong faceoff performance by winning multiple key faceoffs, including a violation win at 7:56. NJIT's offense was effective, scoring three goals,provided by Wyatt Viste, Carson Bowley and Frankie Semiraglio. UMass responded late in the quarter, scoring twice, including a goal by Robbie Granara at 12 seconds left, pulling within one of the Highlanders, 3-2.
UMass capitalized on its opportunities in the second period, outscoring NJIT 7-4. Despite an early goal by NJIT's Ryan Sininsky at 13:52, UMass answered with a goal from Matthew Cargiulo at 13:01. The Highlanders managed to keep pace with goals from Piscitiello and Wyatt Viste, but turnovers and a failed clear attempt contributed to UMass extending its lead. The visitors Jack Turowsky scored twice, including a man-up goal at 6:17, which helped maintain their advantage. At the end of the quarter, UMass held a 9-7 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, UMass outscored NJIT 4-1 and held a 13-8 advantage heading into the fourth period.
NJIT mounted a strong fourth-quarter performance, outscoring Massachusetts 6-5. Despite trailing, NJIT's offense was relentless, with Piscitiello contributing two goals, including one assisted by Carson Piscitiello at the 2:19 mark. NJIT consistently controlled the faceoffs, winning nearly all during the quarter, which fueled its scoring opportunities. NJIT scored five goals in the final 7:40 but it wasn't enough as UMass held onto an 18-14 road victory.
Blake Piscitiello led the offensive charge with three goals and three assists, showcasing accuracy with four shots on goal. Viste contributed with a hat-trick, converting three of his four shots into goals. Carson Bowley added two goals, effectively capitalizing on his three shot attempts. Michael Gaffney controlled the face-off circle by winning 10 of 16 attempts, aiding in maintaining possession.
