Men's Tennis Wins Third Straight with 7-0 Win Over Navy

NEWARK, NJ -- 
The NJIT men's tennis team earned its third consecutive 7-0 sweep on Friday afternoon, shutting out visiting Navy at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.

The Highlanders secured the doubles point before winning five of the six singles matches to complete the dominant victory.

Wil Jenkins and Soma Fukuhara opened doubles play with a 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot. Jenkins went on to post a second victory on the day, defeating Jake Young 6-1, 6-4 at first singles. Fukuhara followed with a strong performance at No. 2 singles, earning a 6-0,3-6, 7-6 decision over Herrick Legaspi.

At second doubles, Riccardo Campagnola and Maxime Hankins dropped 5-7 however the tandem of Nejc Skorjanc and Severin Risan completed the doubles with a 6-1 victory at No. 3. 

Campagnola added to the Highlanders point totals with a straight set win 6-3, 6-1 at third singles over Lachlan Buckingham. Hankins followed with a straight set win 6-1, 6-4 at fifth singles over Ethan Garcia.

Newcomer Yerassyl Bakhtiyar won in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 at fourth singles over Jeffery Etterbeek.

Tom Sorin rounded out the scoring with a convincing 6-1, 7-5 victory at fifth singles over Zachary Quattro.

"Good solid day for us, its good to see us getting better at staying engaged from the outside guys as well as the ones playing," said head coach Marco Matteucci, "Tomorrow will be another challenge and another day to get better!"

The Highlanders return to action on Saturday against Saint Joseph's on Saturday at 4 p.m.
