Men’s Tennis Sweeps FDU in 2026 Home Opener

NEWARK, NJ – The NJIT men's tennis team opened the 2026 home schedule with a dominant 7-0 sweep of visiting FDU on Saturday afternoon at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.

NJIT claimed the doubles point by winning two of three matches and went on to sweep all six singles positions to secure the shutout.

"It was a good start of the year, FDU played good doubles and and kept us on our toes," said head coach Marco Matteucci.  "I thought we had good singles performance from everyone today. We are looking forward to going back to work this week and keep getting better where we need to."

In doubles play, Wil Jenkins and Soma Fukuhara posted a 7-5 victory at No. 1, while Nejc Skorjanc and Severin Risan earned a decisive 6-1 win at third doubles to clinch the opening point.

Jenkins followed with a straight-set victory at first singles, defeating Joshua Oboniye, 6-1, 7-5. 

Fukuhara earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at the second spot over Gryffin Minor, and Skorjanc added a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 3 against Tyler Crook.

Riccardo Campagnola dominated at fourth singles, topping Fareth Ong, 6-0, 6-2. 

Newcomer Yerassyl Bakhtiyar was victorious in his collegiate debut, earning a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5 over Jorge Alonso-Cortes. 

Maxime Hankins closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at sixth singles against Ben Wrann.

NJIT returns to action with six straight home matches, beginning with LIU on February 6 at 4 p.m.
