Late Goal Lifts Highlanders to 1-1 Draw in America East Opener

Caio Carrara’s goal in the 78th minute knotted the match

ALBANY, NY–After allowing a late first half goal, NJIT's Caio Carrara scored the equalizer late in the second half as the Highlanders earned a 1-1 draw at UAlbany in the America East Conference opener for both teams Saturday evening at Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey.

After the 1-1 draw, both teams moved to 2-4-3 overall, 0-0-1 in the America East.

How It Happened

  • A dangerous scoring opportunity for the Highlanders in the 39th minute came off a serve in the box from Diogo Rebelo which was deflected off a Great Dane defender as NJIT's Giovanni Massacesi controlled the ball and got off a left-footed strike but UAlbany's goalkeeper Andrej Krivokapic made the save right in front of the net as the Great Danes cleared the ball.
  • A minute later, the Great Danes scored the first goal of the match on a goal by Roko Branko Mrveji off a corner kick to give UAlbany a 1-0 lead.
  • After the first 45 minutes, NJIT held a slight advantage in overall shots (7-to-6) paced by Diogo Rebelo with three shots.  Minki Jeong combined for two shots in the first half.
  • In the 74th, UAlbany had an opportunity to double the score but NJIT's Devin Armstrong made a one-handed punchout to keep the deficit to one goal.
  • On the first corner kick opportunity of the night for the Highlanders, Rebelo served the ball into the box and was punched out by UAlbany goalkeeper.  Cristian LoGrasso with a secondary chance, serving the ball into the box, finding Caio Carrara inside the box in a lot of traffic to tie the match at 1-1 in the 78th minute.
  • The overall shots were in favor of UAlbany (15-to-11) while the shots on goal were even (5-to-5).
  • UAlbany held a 8-to-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Rebelo finished the match with four total shots.
