NEWARK, N.J. - The NJIT women's soccer team (1-1-0) earned a 3-0 win over UMass (1-1-0) in its home opener on Thursday evening at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
The Highlanders struck first in the 40th minute, when
Maria Nogueira scored directly off a corner kick—an olympico goal—to give NJIT a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
UMass appeared to tie the match in the 52nd minute, but a yellow card negated the goal, keeping the score 1-0.
Mikayla Balio extended the lead in the 56th minute with her first goal of the season. assisted by
Briana Andreoli.
Two minutes later,
Julia Bullock scored the first collegiate goal of her career, also assisted by Andreoli.
Andreoli now has 32 points at NJIT, tying her with Fiona Wright and Bailey Chant for the most in the Division I era.
Sydney Burlingame had an opportunity to extend NJIT's lead in the 64th minute, but a diving save by the UMass goalkeeper kept the score at 3-0.
Merle Hueser,
Kennedy Westbrook, and Nogueira each played the full 90 minutes. Andreoli led the Highlanders with three shots.
Mojisola Ayodele made four saves while playing in the second half.
