Highlanders Sweep Friday Doubleheader at UMBC

Baltimore, Md. – Ray Ortiz posted a perfect offensive day, going a combined 6-for-6 across both games of NJIT's doubleheader sweep of UMBC on Friday. The Highlanders narrowly grabbed the win in game one, 4-3, before unleashing the offense in game two en route to a 15-5 victory.

Ortiz, who collected his 200th career base hit in game one, was one of many Highlander bats that excelled on Friday. Mason Wolf drove in four runs in the two games, while Michael Doyle had a three-RBI performance in game two. Andrew Eppinger also posted multi-hit efforts in both ends of the double dip.

Game 1: NJIT 4, UMBC 3 (7 innings)
The Highlanders drew first blood in the first game of the doubleheader, as a throwing error in the second inning allowed Ty Sallie to cross home plate with the game's first run. Sallie would then add to the lead an inning later on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt which brought home Ortiz from third.

After another run was tacked on in the fourth by Wolf, the Retrievers chipped away and tied things up. A solo home run in the bottom of the fourth got the home side on the board, and two more in the fifth pulled UMBC even with NJIT, 3-3. Prior to the top of the sixth inning, lightning in the area brought the game to a halt.

After a delay of just over two hours, NJIT came out of the stoppage energizes. With one out in the sixth, Ortiz rocketed his third hit of the day off the center field wall. The graduate student was able to reach third base on the triple, but a wild throw from center field sailed out of play and allowed Ortiz to score the go-ahead run.

Game 2: NJIT 15, UMBC 5 (7 innings)
The momentum from late in game one for the Highlanders carried directly into game two. Timely hitting ruled the day for NJIT, showcased first by Wolf's two-run double to open the scoring in the first. A throwing error later in the inning by the UMBC second baseman brought home the third run of the frame, followed by a double from Doyle to cap off the four-run first inning.

The second saw three more Highlanders score. With two men on, Austin Francis doubled them both home with a shot out to right center to push the lead up to 6-0. Francis would work his way down to third and eventually score on a wild pitch. In the third, bases loaded walks from Ortiz and Wolf extended NJIT's lead up to 9-0.

UMBC put up four runs in the bottom of the third, but it would prove to be for naught. Doyle ripped his second RBI double of the night in the fourth inning, scoring Sallie with the 10th NJIT run of the game. Doyle would tack on his third RBI of the night an inning later, working a bases loaded walk to give NJIT an 11-4 lead.

Ortiz put the finishing touches on his perfect day at the plate, lacing an RBI single in the sixth to extend an already sizeable NJIT lead. Sallie and Eppinger would add on later in the inning with run scoring singles of their own as the Highlanders continued to flex their offensive prowess.
