Highlanders Fall to Marist in Extras, 4-3

Little Falls, N.J. – The NJIT baseball team dropped its midweek non-conference tilt with Marist, 4-3, in 10 innings on Wednesday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Highlanders rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning before Marist plated the go-ahead run in extras.

How it Happened
The Highlanders got off on the right foot to start the game, with Ray Ortiz launching a leadoff home run to give NJIT the lead out of the gates. The homer was the eighth of the season for Ortiz which extends his America East lead.

Marist was unable to answer back in the second, stranding a pair of leadoff baserunners as NJIT maintained its lead. That advantage would last until the fourth, when the Red Foxes would plate a pair of runs to gain a 2-1 lead. That score would remain the same until the seventh, when a solo home run padded Marist's lead, 3-1.

Down to their last at-bats, the Highlanders rallied. After a walk to open the inning, NJIT put runners on second and third after an Austin Francis single to right was mishandled. Michael Doyle stepped to the dish and laced a game-tying two-run single to center to level the game at 3-3. With no outs in the inning, NJIT looked to be in business to win the game in the ninth, but Marist was able to dodge any further trouble and force extra innings. The Red Foxes would then reclaim the lead for good in the 10th on a fielder's choice.
