Little Falls, N.J. – Jack Stead and
Mason Wolf each drove in three runs as five NJIT pitchers combined to shutout Saint Peter's, 9-0, on Tuesday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
How it Happened
Pitching and defense ruled the early portion of this game, showcased by NJIT's outfield in the top of the third inning. With one out, a fly ball from Saint Peter's Luke Schwartz carried all the way to the right field wall.
Andrew Hart retreated back to the wall, jumped and reached over the wall to make the catch and rob Schwartz of a home run.
In the fourth, NJIT got the bats going. With two outs, Stead kept his hot streak at the plate going with an RBI double down the left field line to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead. Two innings later, Stead struck once again with a two-run double that split the gap in left center.
The late-game production continued for NJIT in the seventh.
Cole Campbell tacked an RBI onto his line when he fought off a 2-2 pitch and lifted it into left field for a single. Two batters later, Wolf launched a two-run double to right field to extend the Highlanders' lead to 6-0.
Three more Highlanders crossed the plate in the eighth as NJIT continued to add insurance. Campbell roped an RBI single to center to earn his second RBI of the night.
Austin Francis followed by nabbing an RBI on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded. Wolf then brought home the last NJIT run of the night with a sacrifice fly to right field.
