Highlanders Drop Midweek Contest to Monmouth

Little Falls, N.J. – The NJIT baseball team could not extend its winning streak to four as the Highlanders suffered a loss to Monmouth, 8-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

NJIT got off on the right foot, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early advantage. After a pair of one-out walks put a runner in scoring position, Mason Wolf lined the first pitch he saw into centerfield to score Austin Francis from second with the game's first run.

Monmouth would respond in the third, as a sacrifice fly tied the score at 1-1. Another SAC fly gave the Hawks the lead in the fifth and they would extend their lead even further with two more in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth.

NJIT threatened in the bottom of the eighth, kicking off the inning with three straight hits. The last of those three hits came off the bat of Michael Doyle, whose RBI single made it a 7-2 game. One batter later, Andrew Eppinger grounded into a fielder's choice to allow another run to score for the Highlanders. NJIT would bring the tying run to the plate later in the inning, but a flyout from Francis ended the inning.
