Little Falls, N.J. – MT Morrissey earned his third win of the season, working five innings and striking out four, while timely NJIT hitting led the Highlanders to a victory over UMBC, 8-4, on Saturday afternoon.
How it Happened
After UMBC led off the game with a home run, NJIT answered immediately with a three spot in the bottom of the first. After a walk to
Cole Campbell and a double from
Ty Sallie, both were driven in on a triple by
Ray Ortiz. Next,
Mason Wolf brought Ortiz home on a sacrifice fly as the Highlanders scored in the first inning for the 13
th time this season.
NJIT tacked on two more in both the third and fourth innings to extend its lead. With two outs in the third,
Jaden Caballero lined a two-run single to left field to give the Highlanders a 5-1 lead. After the Retrievers hit their second home run of the game in the top of the fourth, NJIT bounced back with RBI base hits from Sallie and Ortiz in the fourth.
Morrissey worked the first five innings, allowing just four hits to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Colin Kidd allowed one earned run in two innings of work out of the bullpen, while
Talon Mihalinac worked two shutout innings to seal the victory.
Sallie would later tack another RBI onto his total in the eighth inning to add some insurance. After Caballero reached on an error earlier in the inning, Sallie would drive him in on an RBI single to center to give NJIT an 8-4 advantage.
