Newark, N.J. – The NJIT men's basketball team fell in its final home game of the season on Saturday to UAlbany, 86-59.
Tariq Francis led the Highlanders with 19 points on the day and connected on a three-pointer for the 44
th consecutive game. Prior to tip-off, the Highlanders honored
Tim Moore Jr. and
Triston Wennersten as part of their Senior Day ceremony.
How it Happened
Getting the start on senior day, Wennersten got off to a hot shooting start for NJIT. On the first possession of the game, he took a pass from Francis and drained a wing three-pointer to put the Highlanders on the board first. After Francis knocked down a jumper of his own from the free-throw line, Wennersten nailed another three as NJIT opened the game on an 8-0 run.
UAlbany would swing momentum back to its side, using a 12-2 run to gain the lead just under five minutes into the game. As the lead grew up to nine at the 12:36 mark, the Highlanders chipped away. A couple key buckets from
Quentin Duncan and an alley-oop slam from
Malachi Arrington cut the NJIT deficit down to four with 7:23 left in the first half and prompted a Great Dane timeout.
Out of the timeout, UAlbany's shooting continued to be red hot as it would stretch the lead to 18 by halftime. The second half was more of the same for the Great Danes as they kept their distance from the Highlanders to come away with the victory.
