Huntsville, Texas – The NJIT baseball team dropped it series finale at Sam Houston on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 6-3.
Ray Ortiz clubbed his third home run over his last four games, while he along with
Andrew Eppinger and
Andrew Hart each collected two hits.
How it Happened
After falling behind early in each of the first two games of the series, Sam Houston flipped the script on the Highlanders by scoring a pair in the first to grab a 2-0 lead. The Bearkats would tack on another in the third on an RBI double to hold a 3-0 lead after three innings. Ortiz would get NJIT on the board in the fourth, leading off the inning by launching a 2-0 pitch over the wall in left for his third round-tripper of the season.
The score would go unchanged until the seventh, when NJIT would bring two runs across the plate to tie the game. Three straight singles by the Highlanders kicked off the frame, the last of which being a run-scoring knock from
Cole Campbell to make it a 3-2 game.
Austin Francis followed by grounding into a double play, however Hart was able to scamper home from third with the tying run. The Bearkats would quickly respond, however, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh and an insurance tally in the eighth to claim the win and avoid the sweep.
