Men’s Soccer Hosts Defending National Champions Vermont Saturday Night

NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT men's soccer team will host defending national champions Vermont on Saturday night at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

Game Information
Saturday's match is slated for 6pm. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+ with in-game statistics available on NJITHighlanders.com.

Promotion 
The first 100 students will receive an NJIT t-shirt.  NJIT Athletics will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium Attendance Record
The attendance (1,028 fans) for the NJIT-UConn men's soccer match on August 28, 2025 was the most fans at a home soccer event.

Men's Soccer tickets can be purchased in advance online at www.NJITtix.com or be purchased the day of the match at the main entrance of Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

All-Time Series
Vermont leads the all-time series 6-2.  The Highlanders have defeated the Catamounts in two of their last three meetings.

Last Time Out
After allowing a late first half goal, NJIT's Caio Carrara scored the equalizer late in the second half as the Highlanders earned a 1-1 draw at UAlbany in the America East Conference opener for both teams.

On the first corner kick opportunity of the night for the Highlanders, Rebelo served the ball into the box and was punched out by UAlbany goalkeeper.  Cristian LoGrasso with a secondary chance, serving the ball into the box, finding Caio Carrara inside the box in a lot of traffic to tie the match at 1-1 in the 78th minute. 

Devin Armstrong - NCAA Rankings
Senior Devin Armstrong combined for a personal-best 12 saves against No. 24 Cornell.  The 12 saves are the most by a Highlander goalkeeper since Collin Cunning combined for 13 saves at Maryland on October 26, 2005.  His 12 saves in a single-game ranks tied for second in the NCAA (as of 9/25/25).

News & Notes
–The Highlanders, 2-4-3 overall, are coming off a 1-1 draw in the America East Conference opener at UAlbany last week.
–The win at CCSU was the first win on the road this season for the Highlanders.
–NJIT picked up its first win in 2025 on Sept. 6 in a 1-0 home victory over Rider.  Sergio Martinez Cubel scored the lone goal and goalkeeper Devin Armstrong combined for the clean sheet.
–The Highlanders started out the season dropping its first two games – at Loyola (MD) and at FDU but picked up a 0-0 draw against UConn on August 28 in front of a sellout crowd.
Cristian LoGrasso and Sergio Martinez Cubel both lead the Highlanders with one goal and one assist for three points.
–Highlander keeper Devin Armstrong leads the America East in saves (42) and ranks second in saves per game (4.67) and tied for first in shutouts (4)
–Head coach Fernando Barboto begins his 10th season at NJIT after guiding the 2024 Highlanders to its fifth straight America East Tournament appearance.
–The Highlanders have welcomed 10 newcomers to the 2025 roster.
–America East All-Championship team selection Sergio Martinez Cubel returns as the Highlanders top goal scorer. Three out of four goals in 2024 came on penalty kicks, all three being successful.
Devin Armstrong, the Highlander keeper, played and started in 17 matches last season after transferring in from Wake Forest (2022-23) and Akron (January 2024), combining for a 6-7-4 overall mark, 60 saves, a 1.51 goals against average and a pair of shutouts.  He posted a personal-best nine saves at Vermont.  Armstrong ranked fourth in the league in saves per game (3.53).
Alvaro Heredia combined for a pair of goals and assists for six points.
–NJIT was voted to finish fifth in the 2025 America East Preseason Coaches Poll

Scouting No. 4 Vermont, the defending National Champions
–Vermont, ranked No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches top 25 poll as of September 30
–The Catamounts enter the match undefeated with a 7-0-3 overall record, 1-0 in the America East
–Lead the Vermont offense is Maximilian Kissel with four goals, three assists for 11 points while three different players have registered three goals on the year. 
–Twelve different players have scored at least one goal this season.
–Andrew Miller paces the team with four assists.
–Goalkeeper Niklas Herceg has started all 10 matches for Vermont and is 7-0-3 with four shutouts with a 0.90 goals against average.  He ranks tied for first in the conference with four shutouts.
–The Catamounts earned a 16-2-6 record during the 2024 season, never surrendering a loss at home from Virtue Field (8-0-4).
–Vermont became the first America East team to ever win a NCAA National Championship and were the first team sport to achieve a National Championship in UVM athletics history.
–The Catamounts captured their seventh America East Championship (second in four years) along the way and scored the most goals in the NCAA Tournament out of any team (13).
