UMass Lowell Scores Late Goal in America East Win at NJIT

NEWARK, NJ–Visiting UMass Lowell scored the lone goal of the match late in the second half to secure a 1-0 road victory over NJIT in America East Conference action on Homecoming Weekend at NJIT on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

NJIT moved to 3-7-4 overall, 1-2-1 in the America East while UMass Lowell improved to 7-4-2 overall, 2-1-1 in the America East.

Quote from Coach Fernando Barboto
"The margin of error in America East Conference action is very small.  Looking ahead with the next two out of three matches on the road, I think we have done better on the road than we did last year.  All the preparation that goes into it – nutrition, rest, pregame rituals have to be perfect.  You never know what to expect when you go on the road."

How It Happened

  • NJIT had an opportunity in the 12th minute on a nice serve in the box by graduate student Giovanni Massacesi to Eric Sadlocha who headed the ball high.

  • In the 15th minute, Devin Armstrong made a diving save to his left on a blast from UMass Lowell Ethan Young.

  • Three different Highlanders – Sadlocha, Diogo Rebelo and Alvaro Heredia each were credited with a shot.

  • An early chance for UMass Lowell in the 48th minute on a shot by Alex Champagne hit the crossbar.

  • Armstrong made another diving save, his eighth of the match, in the 68th minute on a shot by Champagne.

  • Junee Lee with the first shot for the Highlanders in the second half was a long range blast in the 69th minute which sailed wide.

  • UMass Lowell got on the board in the 83rd minute on a loose ball in front of the net and put away by Matteo Costa assisted by Oliver Holmstrom to give the River Hawks a 1-0 lead.

  • Kyle Dixon with a header in the 87th minute went wide right.

  • Devin Armstrong finished with 11 saves (one-shy his career-best mark at #24 Cornell on September 20).  His 11 saves in a single game ranks tied for eighth in the nation.  Armstrong also ranks tied for second in the nation with 12 saves in a single-game.

  • Lee and Sadlocha paced the Highlanders with two shots each.
