Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

First Place UAlbany Downs NJIT; Maguire and Kulyk Each Score 14 Points in Loss


​NEWARK, NJ–Visiting UAlbany downed NJIT, 75-59, Saturday afternoon in women's basketball America East Conference action inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.

The Great Danes, who sit atop the America East standings with a 7-1 mark, 17-4 overall while NJIT falls to 6-14 overall and 3-4 in the league.

NJIT's Olivia Kulyk and Enya Maguire each scored 14 points while Avery O'Roke came off the bench to score nine points.  Maguire scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half, shooting 6-for-13 from the field and Kulyk finished the game 5-of-8 from the field to go along with four rebounds.  O'Roke chipped in nine points in 12 minutes off the bench, a new career-best for the junior from Winchester, Virginia.  Maguire paced the Highlanders on the board with seven rebounds followed by Madilyn Dogs with five.

UAlbany scored the opening six points over the first two minutes and extended its lead to 9-2.  Sparked by a three-pointer by Olivia Kulyk the Highlanders scored six straight points, cutting the Great Danes lead to four, 12-8, at the 5:25 mark.  The Great Danes held an eight-point lead into the under-five media timeout, 18-10, and a 10-4 run by NJIT slimmed the lead to four, 24-20 with less than a minute to go on a three-pointer by Enya Maguire.
 


NJIT, trailing by only four at the end of the first 10 minutes, 26-22, were outscored by the Great Danes in the second quarter 23-12 and trailed by 16 at the half, 49-33.  Olivia Kulyk scored four points for NJIT in the final thirty seconds of the quarter.

Kulyk shared game-high honors with UAlbany's Kaci Donovan scoring 12 points while Enya Maguire added 10 points (all coming in the first quarter).

UAlbany stayed in control in the third quarter, holding the Highlanders to only four points and outscoring NJIT 12-4 to take a 24-point advantage, 61-37 heading into the fourth quarter.

NJIT went on a 14-2 run early in the fourth quarter, closing the Great Danes lead down to 15, behind 10 consecutive points capped four straight points by Avery O'Roke at the 2:52 mark.

UAlbany's Kaci Donovan led three double-figure players and paced all scorers with 19 points and nine rebounds.  Jessica Tomasetti scored (16), Kayla Cooper (14) and Martina Borrellas (10).

Next Week
NJIT will hit the road next week and visit UMass Lowell on January 30 for an early morning tip (11am) on Education Day and Bryant on February 1 (2pm).
