LOWELL, MA–The NJIT women's basketball team moved back into the win column with a 52-38 road victory at UMass Lowell Thursday morning in America East Conference women's basketball action on Thursday.
NJIT snaps a four-game skid, moving to an even 4-4 in the America East and 7-14 overall while UMass Lowell fell to 3-17 overall, 1-7 in the conference.
Senior Trinity Williams scored a team-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, pulled down nine rebounds and registered six blocks.
Graduate student Enya Maguire netted 15 points (a new career-high in a Highlander uniform) on 5-of-9 shooting from downtown, including seven rebounds, five assists and three assists.
Alejandra Zuniga chipped in 10 points, five assists and three rebounds.
NJIT scored the first eight points of the game and opened up the contest on a 20-2 after the first 10 minutes of action. Enya Maguire led all scorers with nine points on 3-of-4 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range. The Highlanders held the River Hawks scoreless for the final 5:30 of the first quarter.
UMass Lowell got things going in the second quarter, outscoring the visiting NJIT 13-3, closing the Highlanders gap to single digits at the half, 23-15.
Maguire led all players with nine points (all coming in the first quarter) followed by Trinity Williams with five points, four blocks and three rebounds.
A 8-2 run for NJIT to start the third quarter pushed the Highlanders lead to 14, 31-17. UMass Lowell went on an 8-0 spurt, pulling within five, 31-26, of the Highlanders with two minutes on the clock. NJIT held a five-point lead 34-29 going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Zuniga sparked a 9-0 run on a three-pointer at the seven-minute mark and the Highlander run was capped by Maguire's fourth triple of the game for a 43-31 lead at the 4:45 mark. UMass Lowell cut the lead to single digits, nine, 45-36, but it wasn't enough as Williams scored the final four points of the contest to secure the 52-38 road victory.
UMass Lowell's Maddie Rice scored 18 points while Abbey Lindsey combined for 13 points.
