Albany, N.Y. – Tariq Francis scored a season-high 27 points, 17 of which came in the second half, but the NJIT men's basketball team fell short on Saturday afternoon to UAlbany, 68-62.
Francis, who at one point scored 15 straight NJIT points in the second half, shot 10-of-22 from the floor on the afternoon. The sophomore headlined a trio of Highlanders in double figures, as both
Tim Moore Jr. and
Levi Lawal finished with 10 points.
How it Happened
For much of the day, NJIT was able to answer every UAlbany run. The first came right out of the gates, when a 6-0 start for the Great Danes was answered by a 12-0 Highlander run to take the lead. UAlbany would regroup to regain the lead, and the advantage would trade hands twice more during the closely played opening half. UAlbany grew its lead to eight with under two minutes remaining in the first, but back-to-back buckets from Francis shrunk the deficit to four at halftime, 30-26.
The Great Danes started the second half strong, eventually growing a nine point lead just six minutes after halftime. NJIT answered with an 11-0 run, with nine of the points being scored by Francis and the last two coming off a sweet dish from the sophomore guard down low to Lawal.
The aftermath of the NJIT run played out similarly to the first half, where the two teams would trade the lead over the next several minutes. Francis did all he could to keep NJIT in the game, but the Great Danes' zone defense helped give them momentum down the stretch to pull out the close win.
