Riverdale, N.Y. – The NJIT women's volleyball team snapped its four game losing streak on Tuesday night, defeating Manhattan on the road in straight sets. The Highlanders controlled set one, 25-18, before edging out the Jaspers in sets two and three by the same score, 25-21.
NJIT opened the match strong, opening up a 10-3 lead early on. Manhattan worked its way back to within three points midway through the set, but ensuing kills from
Doga Emil and
Mariana Cova helped the Highlanders stretch its lead back out to seven. NJIT held at least a three-point edge through the remainder of the frame to take the lead in the match.
Set two was close early, but an
Ema Torres kill helped NJIT extend its lead to three midway through the set, 10-7. After consecutive points from the home side, the Highlanders went on a 5-0 run, capped by an ace from Cova, to take a 15-9 lead. Manhattan had another rally in it, working its way back to within one, 20-19, late in the stanza. NJIT once again fought off the comeback, and a kill from
Ines Varela gave the Highlanders a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set three saw more Highlander dominance, as the visitors took a six-point advantage midway through the set after an Emil service ace. NJIT's lead would later stretch to nine, 18-9, after Varela and
Rowan Schreiber combined for a block on a Manhattan attack. NJIT was able to keep Manhattan at bay and close out set three for its fifth win of the season.
Torres paced the Highlanders with nine kills on just 14 attempts for a highly efficient .643 hitting percentage. Varela posted a great all-around match, finishing with eight kills, five digs, four aces and four total blocks.
