STORRS, CT–Visiting NJIT suffered its first loss of the 2024 season as UConn defeated the Highlanders, 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer action at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium at Rizza Performance Center on the campus of UConn.
UConn picked up its second straight win of the season improving to 2-0-0 while NJIT moved to 1-1-1 on the young season.
How It Happened

UConn went ahead in the 29st minute off a free kick on a goal off a header by Scott Testori into the upper left assisted by Max Gummesson.

Two minutes later, NJIT's Alvaro Heredia and Amit Magoz each were credited with a shot which was saved by UConn's keeper Max Kerkvliet.

The Huskies doubled the lead in the 51st minute on a goal by Sabri Hanni with a left-footed blast inside the box past a diving Evan Chomow.

After the first 45 minutes, NJIT held a 6-5 lead in overall shots (3-1 SOG) led by Alvaro Heredia and Asembo Augo.

After a video review on a ball that hit a UConn player's arm, Sergio Martinez Cubel, the reigning America East Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week made it a one goal game, tucking away his second goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 76th minute.

The goal for Martinez Cubel was his second of the season and fourth of his career. Martinez Cubel's first goal of the season was coincidentally on a penalty kick in Newark in a 1-1 draw against Loyola Maryland on August 22.

Chomow made his first collegiate start in goal for the Highlanders, stopping three Husky shots.

Next Up
After a two match road swing, NJIT will return back home and welcome Saint Peter's on September 7. Kickoff is slated for 7pm on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
