NJIT Baseball Concludes 2024 Season at America East Tournament

Highlanders Finish with 26 Wins, the Second Most in Program History

VESTAL, NY - The NJIT baseball team saw its 2024 season come to a close on Friday evening as the third-seeded Highlanders fell 11-6 to second-seeded UMBC in the semifinals of the America East Tournament.

UMBC advances to Saturday's Championship against top-seeded Bryant, while the Highlanders end their season with a 26-28 record. The 26 wins are the second most in program history, falling one win short of the 2021 squad's 27-win mark.

The highlight of Friday's game came early as Cade Ladehoff hit his 13th home run of the season in the top of the first to put the Highlanders ahead 1-0 and give the freshman the single-season hits record of 78, which broke David Marcano's previous record of 77 set in the 2022 season.Cade Ladehoff Hits Record

The early lead was NJIT's only of the game. UMBC scored five times in the third to take a lead it never relinquished.

NJIT scored a pair of runs in the fourth to get within two, but UMBC immediately answered with three runs to extend their lead to 8-3.

Ladehoff's 79th hit of the season was also his 14th long ball of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth to get the Highlanders back within three, but that was as close as they'd get.

UMBC tacked on two in the sixth and one more in the eighth to go in front 11-5 before Kevin Putsky capped off his five-year NJIT career with his 12th home run of the season in the ninth to make the final score 11-6.

Freshman Colin Kidd pitched a pair of shutout innings to start the game and classmate Anthony Anzaldi struck out five over the final three innings of work to lead the pitching staff.

Ladehoff finished the season with 14 home runs, which ranks second-most in program history and 60 RBIs, which is 15 more than any other Highlander hit in a season and leads the America East.

Following Saturday's America East Championship, Aidan Kidd and Luke Longo were named to the All-Tournament Team. Kidd struck out 10 and earned the win on Thursday vs. Binghamton, while Longo had two huge home runs for the Highlanders, including a go-ahead homer in the bottom of the eighth of Friday's win vs. UMass Lowell.
