Women's Tennis Holds Off Drexel For 4-3 Victory

PHILADELPHIA — The NJIT women's tennis team began the final week of the regular season by holding off the Drexel Dragons for a 4-3 road victory Friday evening at the Vidas Courts.

"The team played well and fought hard today against a very talented Drexel team," head coach Patricia Piorkowski McDonald said after the thrilling win. "Doubles play was solid today and Irene was very composed and focused to clinch the match for us in singles. It was a good all-around team effort today."

With the doubles point and the first singles point in hand at No. 3, the Highlanders (14-3) went ahead 2-0 but Drexel (8-6) leveled the match by winning at the top two singles flights. Both teams split the next two flights at No. 6 (NJIT) and No. 4 (Drexel), leaving flight No. 5 as the decider. Irene Cocero took the first set after a 9-7 tiebreaker, dropped the second set, and dominated the third to finish off the win for the Highlanders.
