UAlbany Comes From Behind to Defeat NJIT in Extra Innings

Highlanders Fall 8-7 in 11 Innings

ALBANY, NY - The NJIT baseball team fell 8-7 to host UAlbany in 11 innings on Saturday in the second contest of a three-game series hosted by the Great Danes this weekend at Varsity Field.

The Highlanders led 5-1 before UAlbany scored four runs to tie the game and send it to extra innings. 

Sophomore Dillon Can recorded a huge two-out hit in the 11th to score a pair and put the Highlanders back in front, but the Great Danes scored three times in the home half of the inning to get the win. 

UAlbany scored the first run of the game in the second inning and the Highlanders immediately answered in the third when Kevin Putsky singled to score Cole Campbell.

NJIT went in front in the fourth with four runs to take a 5-1 lead. Jack Stead and Putsky each had an RBI in the inning.

The Great Danes got back into the game with a three-run fifth and tied things up on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. 

After a scoreless ninth and 10th innings, the Highlanders got a pair of baserunners on base to lead off the 11th. The runners moved over on a sacrifice bunts and after a flyout, Can was able to plate a pair of runs to give NJIT the 7-5 lead. 

UAlbany loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 11th and were able to score three runs to get the win and clinch the series victory. 

The top three hitters in the NJIT order - Cade Ladehoff, Campbell, and Ray Ortiz each had two hits to lead the NJIT offense. 

Joe Georgini was tremendous out of the bullpen for the Highlanders, tossing five innings and allowing just one unearned run. 

NJIT will look to get back in the win column on Sunday when the teams wrap up the series at 12pm back at Varsity Field.
