Late NJIT Rally Falls Just Short as Quinnipiac Takes Series Finale 5-3

Ortiz, Doyle Each Reach Base Three Times

HAMDEN, CT - The NJIT baseball team brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate in the top of the ninth, but the rally was halted as Quinnipiac held on for a 5-3 victory in non-conference action at the QU Baseball Field.

The Bobcats led 5-1 entering the ninth before Cole Campbell led off the inning with his second home run of the season to make the score 5-2. Austin Francis drew a walk and after an out that moved Francis to second, Cade Ladehoff smoked a single up the middle to score Francis and send the tying run to the plate.

Albert Choi, who ended Saturday's game with a walk off home run, kept the rally going with a single of his own, which brought up Luke Longo with one out and runners on first and second. Quinnipiac was able to get Longo to ground into a double play to end the rally and clinch the victory and series win after the teams split the first two games.

The Bobcats got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first. NJIT tied it two innings later when Longo knocked in AJ Soldra.

Quinnipiac jumped back in front with two runs in the fourth and added one more run in both the fifth and seventh innings to make the score 5-1 before the late Highlanders rally.

Ray Ortiz had a pair of hits to lead the NJIT offense, while reaching base a third time with a walk. Michael Doyle also reached base three times, all via walks.

The NJIT bullpen was impressive for the second-straight day. On Saturday, veteran Joe Georgini tossed 4.1 scoreless out of the 'pen and Liam Reiner (2.2 innings) and Aaron Park (1.0 innings) didn't allow an earned run on Sunday. Park pitched a perfect eighth inning to keep the Highlanders within striking distance.

NJIT hosts Saint Peter's in midweek action this Wednesday to begin a busy week at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Highlanders and Peacocks will meet at 7pm and then NJIT will host UMBC in a three-game America East series next weekend.
