Highlanders Defeated 7-3

LITTLE FALLS, NJ - The NJIT baseball team was unable to complete the three-game sweep of UMass Lowell in America East baseball action this weekend as the Highlanders were defeated 7-3 in Sunday's series finale at Yogi Berra Stadium.

NJIT won Friday's opener 4-3 and dominated its way to a 10-2 win on Saturday before the Riverhawks were able to get out in front early and take Sunday's game.

Holden deJong, the Highlanders' starting pitcher was brilliant through three innings, allowing just one baserunner on a soft hit in the third inning after back-to-back 1-2-3 innings to start the game. UML was able to solve de Jong, however, in the fourth, scoring six runs to get out to a comfortable lead.

The Riverhawks added a run an inning later to go ahead 7-0.

NJIT was finally able to get on the scoreboard in the seventh when Ty Sallie singled up the middle to score Austin Francis.

The Highlanders once again rallied in the eighth, loading the bases and scoring a pair of runs on RBIs from Michael Doyle and Sallie. Cole Campbell stepped up to the plate as a pinch hitter and was the potential-tying run and was called out at first on a very close play.

UML held the Highlanders off the scoreboard in the ninth to earn the victory and avoid the sweep.

The Highlanders' offense totaled 10 hits on Sunday, led by a 4-for-4 day from Doyle, who also recorded a pair of hits in Saturday's win. Cade Ladehoff and Sallie each added a pair of hits.

Drew Standen, Talon Mihalinac, and Aaron Park combined to allow just one run in six innings out of the NJIT bullpen.

NJIT is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday at Wagner. First pitch is slated for 7:00pm on Staten Island.
