ARLINGTON, TX - The NJIT men's tennis team, ranked #57 in the latest ITA computer rankings, dropped its second match of the season on Wednesday, falling 4-3 to host UT-Arlington at the UTA tennis center.
The Highlanders fall to 11-2 on the season, while the Mavericks evened their record at 6-6.
NJIT went ahead 1-0 as it narrowly won the doubles point. German Lopez Anujar and
Nejc Skorjanc got the Highlanders on the board with a 6-4 win at #2 doubles, before NJIT's top pairing of
Pablo Perez Ramos and
Wil Jenkins won via a tiebreak to put the Highlanders ahead 1-0 in the match.
UTA took the top four singles pairings to win the four matches needed for the team victory. NJIT got a straight-set win from
Oscar Callo von Platen at #5, while Lopez Andujar won his match at #6 by injury default. Lopez Andujar was ahead 6-5 in the third set when his opponent defaulted.
"We fought really hard competing outdoors for the first time this season," said third-year NJIT Head Coach
Marco Matteucci. "We played well at most positions, but ultimately fell to a team that will likely be ranked in the Top 75 soon."
The Highlanders close out their spring break trip to Texas on Saturday when they take on Incarnate Word at 11am (CT) in San Antonio.Â
"We need to take this loss and learn from it for our next matches," concluded Matteucci.
