NJIT Sweeps Visiting FDU in Non-Conference Action


NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT men's volleyball team moved back into the win column with a 3-0 sweep against visiting FDU Friday night in non-conference men's volleyball action inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness Center.

NJIT won in straight sets 25-21, 25-15 and 25-16, improving to an even 8-8 on the season. 

Friday marked the first all-time meeting between the two schools.  FDU started its men's volleyball program in 2022 and plays in the Northeast Conference.  The Knights fall to 6-7 overall.

For the match, NJIT hit an impressive .417 paced by Andrew Fedmasu with nine kills on 10 attempts for a .900 hitting percentage.  Junior Alessandro Negri combined for nine kills as well, while hitting .500 for the match.  Carson Williams finished with four kills on six attempts in the home victory.

Senior setter Griffin Fieseler recorded 28 assists, four block assists and two service aces.

Will Migdal led the Highlanders defensively with five digs to go along with three block assists and five digs.

In front of the net, Carson Williams, Fieseler and Fedmasu each notched four block assists 

NJIT used a late 5-1 run in the first set to take an 18-13 lead in the late teens, resulting in an FDU timeout.   The Knights went on a run of their own, using a 6-1 spurt to knot the set at 19-all.  NJIT responded with four straight points, capped by an ace by Andrew Fedmasu for a 23-19 score.  NJIT scored the final two out of three points, including a kill by Alessandro Negri to take the first set 25-21.

Both teams started off the second frame back and forth as the Highlanders used a 8-2 spurt midday through the set to take a 16-8 lead.  FDU used a short 3-1 spurt to trim the NJIT lead to six, 17-11.  The Highlanders cruised to a 25-15 win to go up 2-0 behind three straight points, capped by an ace by Griffin Fieseler

FDU scored the first two points of the third set but the Highlanders responded to push its lead to as many as four, 12-8, on a kill by Antonio Feliciano.  NJIT extended its lead to 16-12 and later 24-13 behind seven consecutive points.  NJIT secured the 3-0 home win with a kill by Braeden Goebbert.

NJIT will return to EIVA Conference action on March 8 when the Highlanders visit George Mason.  First spike set for 7pm.  

 

In the first meeting in Newark, the Patriots topped the Highlanders, 3-1.
