Home Sweep; Men’s Volleyball Wins Fourth Straight


NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT men's volleyball team won its fourth straight match of the season with a 3-0 home sweep against Merrimack Sunday afternoon in men's volleyball non-conference action inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.

NJIT, winners of the last seven out of eight matches, improves to 7-4 on the season and 5-1 at home inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.  Merrimack falls to 2-5 on the season.

The Highlanders won in straight sets 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18.

Leading the way offensively for the Highlanders was Antonio Feliciano with a match-best 11 kills for a .286 hitting percentage to go along with four digs and two block assists.  Middle Carson Williams added three kills on four attempts for a .750 hitting percentage.

Griffin Fieseler combined for 22 assists, three aces and two block assists while Gil Zyndorf and Christian Trevino led NJIT with five digs each.

In front of the net, Williams registered six total blocks (two solo, four assists) in the victory.

NJIT got off to a quick 6-1 start to get things going in the first set, resulting in a timeout by Merrimack and continued its five-point lead 14-9, after an ace by Griffin Fieseler.  Merrimack cut the Highlander lead to two, 14-12, but NJIT used a 5-2 run to push ahead 20-15, and closed out the set with five straight points, capped by a kill from Julian Meissner for a 25-16 win.

The Highlanders continued its momentum into the second set, taking a 7-2 advantage.  Merrimack rallied back to slim the lead to four, 14-10, but the Highlanders scored back-to-back points, capped by a service ace from Josh Gregg for a 16-10 lead, resulting in a timeout by Merrimack.  NJIT finished off the set on a 7-2 spurt to go up 2-0 with a 25-16 victory.

Another early lead for the home team to open the third frame, NJIT led 9-4, resulting in a timeout by the Warriors.  Merrimack used a 5-1 run to close the NJIT gap to one, 10-9, but the Highlanders responded scoring the next four points, extending its lead to five, 14-9.  NJIT scored straight in the late teens and early twenties for a 21-14 lead with Alessandro Negri registering three kills in the run.   

Merrimack was paced by Logan Whitaker's eight kills and Kyle Standage led all players with six digs.

NJIT will return to action and play a mid-week match on Thursday at Sacred Heart.  First spike slated for 7pm.
