FAIRFIELD, CT–Sacred Heart swept visiting NJIT, 3-0, in non-conference men's volleyball action Thursday evening.
With the win, Sacred Heart improves to 4-6 overall while the Highlanders four-match win streak was snapped, moving to 7-5 on the season.
The Pioneers defeated the Highlanders 25-18, 25-22 and 25-21 led by Patrick Mucherino's match-best 14 kills and six digs.
In the first frame, the match tied at 6-6, saw Sacred Heart use an 11-4 run to take a six-point lead, 16-10. NJIT used a short 5-2 spurt to slim the Pioneer lead to five, 23-18, but Sacred Heart scored the final two points for a 25-18 victory.
Both teams went back and forth, battling through nine ties, the final at 20-all. NJIT pulled within one of the Pioneers twice (22-21 and 23-22) after a kill by Antonio Feliciano. The Pioneers scored back-to-back points to go up 2-0 with a 25-22 win.
Sacred Heart took a 14-9 lead midway through the third frame but the Highlanders fought back to cut the deficit to two , 17-15, behind a 3-1 run. The Pioneers went on a 6-1 spurt to extend its lead to as many as seven, 23-16. The Highlanders answered with a run of their own, using a 5-1 spurt to close the gap to within three, 24-21 but Sacred Heart scored the final point to secure the 3-0 sweep with a 25-21 victory.
NJIT's Will Migdal led the Highlanders with 10 kills followed by Andrew Fedmasu (nine kills) and Antonio Feliciano (eight kills). Fedmasu combined for a .429 hitting percentage to go along with two aces and two digs.
Setter Griffin Fieseler recorded 23 assists, two digs and one block assist while Alessandro Negri registered four digs and three service aces.
NJIT, which will break for a week, will return to action on Friday, February 16 at 6pm, hosting George Mason inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
